" when you get over a certain weight, that could be the largest fruit that's ever been grown, at least in record-able history," david hertzfeld said. he's the owner/father/whispe rer to the mammoth pumpkin. the records skyrocketed in the 80s, from 459 pounds to over 2,300 pounds now. "no, nothing is banned," hertzfeld said of pumpkin performance enhancers. "as far as weights go, you can use anything you can get your hands on. a lot of guys are kind of fiddling with different growth hormones." in peak season, the watery flesh packs on 40 pounds a day! each pumpkin needs more space than an average two bedroom apartment. "most people find it fascinating in a way," hertzfeld said. "they can't really understand why i am doing it." "i couldn't be prouder," david's mom dawn said. dawn drove him to the anderson's for pumpkin seeds at age six. he brought a 150+ pound monster into an elementary school contest and blew his class out of the water. "and it caused quite a stir and they really didn't think that he had grown it." david spends at least four hours a day with his prized pumpkin in late
